Small Business

"Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe."

Abraham Lincoln

Let me speak personally: Entrepreneurship is near and dear to my heart.

My parents raised me in a small business. My grandparents owned small businesses. My great-grandparents started a clothing store that is still family-owned today, 110 years later.

Following tradition, I have started and operated multiple companies, from retail to wholesale to service industry -- from local to international. Small business is a passion of mine, and I want to help you if it's a passion of yours, too.

WHERE ARE YOU IN YOUR JOURNEY?

Whether you've just started imagining your own business or you're operating one that has been in the family for 50 years, James Legal offers services for your specific needs.

I have a start-up.

Aside from a great business idea, the most important element of a successful business is the work that goes into organizing it. There is no escaping the fact that most small businesses are prone to failure within the first few years. Getting off on the right foot can help you beat the odds.

These are just a few of the things you need to know:

  • What business structure is right for you?

  • What organizational documents, if any, do you need?

  • Are there any special tax or reporting requirements for your industry?

  • Do you have the proper license(s) to conduct business?

  • Are there local ordinances that may impact you?

  • If you have a partner, what happens if you disagree?

  • How will you protect your intellectual property? (see Trademarks and Other IP)

Addressing these issues can save you a lot of time, money, and headache down the road. Follow the link below to see how James Legal can help:

I already have an established business.

The legal needs of an established business are as varied as the types of industries. Generally, all businesses need contract review and drafting, term negotiation, and development and monitoring of various internal procedures. This is precisely why large corporations hire in-house counsel (aka. General Counsel). General Counsel isn't cheap, however, and small businesses rarely need full-time legal oversight. Nonetheless, having an attorney on-call to give legal advice and assist with these important tasks is immensely beneficial.

As a solution, James Legal can serve as a fractional or "part-time" General Counsel for your business. This allows even the smallest enterprise to fit legal guidance into their budgets. Since needs will vary depending on your size, industry, and risk exposure, give James Legal a call so we can discuss the best option for you.
